During our 2002/2003 winter dinner, we watched a number of Volvo videos, including a European stage rally that resembled a Volvo Demolition Derby, many 240 models crashing, banging and flipping. Several people commented on the unfortunate home owner whose front garden became the run-out area for a half dozen cars.

Another video was taken from a collection of 8mm film and still photos from the period of the late 50s to the mid 60s. we would like to thanks our club member Barry Nelson for his contribution.

A good number of the stills were taken at Westwood Racing Circuit, Coquitlam, BC. For those of you not familiar with the circuit, it was built by the Sports Car Club of BC in the 1950s. It was decommissioned in the early 1990s and now is home to many new houses in the Westwood Plateau area. These photos were put onto video and then transferred to digital media, so the quality is not the best. We will work on fixing this as time permits.

Some of the photos appear to have been taken at the Knox Mountain Hill Climb, though this has yet to be verified. The Knox Mountain Hillclimb started around about the same time as Westwood opened, and as the name indicates, is held on Knox Mountain, Kelowna, BC.

We hope to fill you in on the details as they become available.

Comments that we have so far:

Photos #1 through #9: Westwood. Photo #7: Sorry, it's not a Volvo, but was a home-built car well known at Westwood during the period. This 1100 cc Coventry-Climax powered car was owned by Ken Finnigan, father of Club member Cam Finnigan. You will notice the "For Sale" sign on the car.

Photo #11: Believed to be at Knox Mountain.
